Heating costs in 2026: heating will cost more for many

Heating costs are changing in very different ways in 2026. According to the Heizspiegel, heating oil and wood pellets in particular will become much more expensive. Gas may initially be cheaper on average over the year. Still, prices could change again later.

What is new?

According to the Heizspiegel 2026, many households paid more for heating in 2025. For 2026, the outlook depends heavily on the heating type. Forecast for a 70-m² flat in an apartment building:

  • Heating oil: around 1.275 € (+24 %)
  • Wood pellets: around 860 € (+17 %)
  • Heat pump: around 735 € (+3 %)
  • District heating: around 1.310 € (+1 %)
  • Natural gas: around 1.120 € (−4 %)

These are nationwide comparison figures and forecasts. Your actual costs may be different.

Who is affected?

This matters to you if you:

  • rent a flat and pay for heating through the Nebenkosten (running costs),
  • have your own gas contract,
  • heat with oil, pellets, district heating or a heat pump,
  • own a flat or a house,
  • are worried about an extra payment.

What should you do?

  1. Find out what heats your flat.
  2. Check your usage, if possible.
  3. Check whether your monthly payment still matches your usage and price.
  4. Don't just increase it by a random amount.
  5. If possible, put some money aside for an extra payment.
  6. If a bill seems very high, check it before accepting it.
  7. If you can't pay, get help early.

When does it apply?

The Heizspiegel was published on 22 September 2026. The figures for 2026 are a forecast. It is not yet clear when higher wholesale gas prices will show up in your contract.
