Sort out your driving licence in Germany

Check how long your foreign driving licence is valid in Germany and whether you have to exchange it.

The issuing state decides

How your licence is treated in Germany depends on the country that issued it, not on where you come from.

Is your licence still valid?

The German rules do not help you if your licence is already invalid in the issuing state.

  • Check the expiry date of your licence.
  • Note any restrictions entered in your licence.
  • A learner licence or a provisional licence is not enough.

Where do you exchange your licence?

The driving licence office at your place of residence is responsible. Depending on the city it may sit at the municipal or the district administration.

Translating and certifying documents

Before you have anything translated or certified: clarify with the responsible office which form is really required.

What you should do now

  • Check whether your licence is valid.
  • Check how long it is recognised after you establish your residence in Germany.
  • Check which exchange rules apply based on the issuing state.
  • Apply for the exchange at your driving licence office in good time if you want to keep driving permanently.
