Working hours, breaks & rest

How long you may work, when breaks are needed and what applies to overtime.

The Working Hours Act protects your health. It sets limits for working time, breaks and rest periods.

The essentials

  • As a rule at most 8 hours per working day, temporarily up to 10 hours if it evens out on average.
  • Break: at least 30 minutes for more than 6 hours, 45 minutes for more than 9 hours.
  • At least 11 hours of rest between two working days.
  • Work on Sundays and public holidays is generally not allowed, but many sectors have exceptions.
