Fixed-term contract (befristeter Vertrag)

What applies to a fixed-term contract and when you must register.

A fixed-term contract ends on a set date or when a certain task is done. No dismissal is needed.

The essentials

  • The fixed term must be agreed in writing before you start work. Otherwise the contract usually counts as permanent.
  • Without a specific reason, a fixed term is allowed for at most two years. Within this time it may be extended up to three times.
  • With a specific reason, for example covering for someone, the term can be longer.
  • Ordinary notice before the end is only possible if your contract or collective agreement allows it.
  1. Agree the fixed term in writing
  2. Work
  3. Register as job-seeking 3 months before
  4. Contract ends
