Job reference (Arbeitszeugnis)

When you get a reference and what to look out for.

When an employment ends, you are entitled to a written job reference.

The essentials

  • A simple reference states the type and length of the work.
  • On request you get a qualified reference. It also assesses performance and conduct.
  • The reference must be clear and understandable. Hidden negative statements are not allowed.
  • You can also ask for an interim reference while you are still employed. Whether you are entitled to one depends on the reason and on your contract or collective agreement.
  1. Ask for a reference
  2. Receive the reference
  3. Check the content
  4. Ask for corrections if needed
