Work

Seasonal work (Saisonarbeit)

What applies to work for a few weeks or months, for example in agriculture.

Seasonal work is work for a limited time, often in agriculture, hospitality or tourism. Employment rights apply here too.

The essentials

  • Short-term employment is possible for at most 3 months or 70 working days per calendar year. No social security contributions are due then.
  • In short-term employment you are not health-insured through the job. Clarify beforehand how you are insured.
  • Whether you need a permit to work depends on your citizenship. EU citizens do not need one.

Myth: The minimum wage does not apply to seasonal work.

Fact: It does. The minimum wage applies to seasonal work, as do the rules on working hours and breaks.
