Other special routes

German citizenship law contains additional routes besides ordinary naturalization, including discretionary naturalization (section 8), spouses of German citizens (section 9), adoption of minors (section 6), certain ethnic German resettlers (section 7) and other special provisions.

Find the relevant special route

First identify the relevant category and read its particular requirements. Adoption and resettler citizenship are not ordinary five-year applications. Naturalization from abroad has separate rules. Ask the competent authority for the applicable official procedure.

Citizenship through adoption

A child adopted by a German citizen under an adoption legally effective in Germany may acquire citizenship under section 6 StAG if the age and other legal requirements are met. Adoptions made abroad require separate examination of their legal effect.

Ethnic German resettlers and relatives

Certain ethnic German resettlers and relatives included in the admission decision acquire citizenship under section 7 StAG when the certificate under section 15 BVFG is issued. The correct official route depends on the admission records, not a general naturalization check.
